Tell me a story ... |
|||||||
A French teacher and a sculptor, this is us when we built the original OLU in 1981. At the time, it was conceptualised and built like a piece of sculpture, the sides in place before the roof was considered. Implicit was a statement about affordable, low-impact housing, an issue Craig has explored in his art work for twenty-five years. We built the original octagon with found and salvaged mateials for $3,000, then lived there for three years before heading for NYC. |

"Whereas shelter can be understood to imply a barrier against the harshness of natural phenomena, as these structures made by hand show us, for Pleasants, home is at once a safe and private environment, and a world in which the organic and the human are in harmony." -Laura Hoptman, curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, Museum of Modern Art. |
